Ash Woman is carved from a piece of ash driftwood I found at the old entrance to Millwall Dock on the Isle of Dogs in Docklands. It was in amongst a load of old rubbish - all the flotsam and jetsam of the Thames and stuff dumped in the old dockway entrance. It was a spontaneous piece that took its inspiration from the branched character of the piece of wood. I was very limited in what I could achieve in terms of detail to the still-limited range of my gouges.
